Here we are day six already, that’s 20% of the way through! Tonights fishing was done in another new location, Tutukaka harbour.
The wind had dropped today but not the swell, there was no way I was going to be able to get out and stay out, or upright, if I was to venture out of the confines of the harbour.
I tried a few places but found the most stable spot to be was tucked up close to Lion Rock, might have been a comfortable position but it was devoid of all fish, 20 plus casts and not even a nibble.
So I decided to try drifting further into the harbour and fish the main channel, the deepest part, first cast – nibbles – YES there is life in here! Most casts got hit by a nibble or two but that was all, no hookups, gotta be small stuff, so kept drifting.
It seemed the further away from the entrance I got the better the bites got until I got a couple of hookups, still no landed fish though, I ended up about 200 meters from the entrance and bang hookup and the hook wasn’t spat, and on board comes a small Snapper, probably just under legal but I never measured, back it went so I could hunt for bigger prey.
I ended up with a few more bites and a couple of hookups ending in dropped hooks, none of them felt as big as the last fish, and nothing else made it to the kayak.
Sun going down and another day done, fishing another new location tomorrow… Watch this space!
