Been raining on and off here in Whangarei today, looked like it was going to be a wet one tonight that’s for sure, but by the time I got home it turned out to be ok, a bit of a breeze was hanging around, so where tonight..?

For the eagle eyed among you, you would have noticed something strange in the photos of Day 22 – something that was there, then wasn’t there… If you didn’t at the time, go back and have a look, answer later…

Tonight I was going to head back up the Ngunguru estuary again.  As you will know it’s become my favourite place of late, always catch fish, a feed if you really wanted, and it has the magic bit where once the sun goes down, the place comes alive with fish jumping all over the place.

So I set off up the estuary with an outgoing tide but with a breeze in my back so they pretty much cancel each other out, I prospected all over on the way down the estuary but as usual nothing till I reached the rocks, a few small bites but no takers yet.

Did you work out what was missing from the latter photos of Day 22 yet..? No? I’ll put you out of your misery then, it’s my flag, it must have got knocked out during the evening, I had a good idea when, so my plan was to go for a fish and at the same time see if i can salvage my flag at the same time.

Problem was the tide wasn’t out far enough when I got there, low tide was 10:30pm, and when it was getting close to the same as Saturday it was too dark to see in the water… So the flag may just stay lost forever…

Back to the fishing… as the sun set as expected the place lit up, the bites got stronger and it wasn’t long before the Snapper started coming aboard in quick succession, again nothing huge but a few legal ones, you could have got yourself a feed if you wanted.

I’ll try to get back in the ocean again tomorrow night, then if the weather holds, I’m heading north on Friday for three days…

I knew straight away it was the flag . In the last 6 weeks ive had 2 ocean kayak light poles go awol on me !
You know how expensive they are ! The first one unscrewed itself and ended up in the drink . The second one snapped at the base when i leaned back to place a fish in the bag .
Im attaching a safety line next time .
