After coming to the conclusion that Whangaumu isn’t holding any Snapper, well at least for me in the center or northern side, I decided to try back in the Whangarei harbour where at least I picked up several fish on Sunday…

I thought I’d try further up the harbour this time though. I launched from Onerahi out the back of the airport, great launching and parking facilities. There was a strong north easterly blowing and the tide was coming in, so I planned my assault to be up stream of the current so at least the hard paddle would be early then I could use the wind and current to my advantage when returning to the boat ramp.

I crossed the channel, nothing showing on the sounder, pushed on around the point of Limestone Island where I spotted several boats fishing. I go with the wind and slowly drift towards them prospecting all over with my softbait. I only managed two or three bites at most, and they were only nibbles… Of the two of the boats I saw fishing one had a father and kids in catching sprats and the other had two old fellas who weren’t catching either so they headed off to rat Island.

I decided to head back to the channel and dug in deep for a paddle against the wind. Getting to the south side of the channel turned up nothing, so decided to head all the way over to Tamaterau then drift back down the channel to Onerahi, nothing, nothing, nothing, then bang, bang, bang, three nice Snapper in quick succession.

I had obviously found a shoal but had now drifted past it, no more bites, it went dead as it had been the rest of the night, so I carried on going with the flow back to the ramp and called it a day.
