Day thirteen, will at least it wasn’t unlucky… Tonight I headed down to Urquharts Bay at the end of the Whangarei heads for a bit of a practice and look around before the King of the Harbour competition on Sunday (Day 16)
I headed to Urquharts Bay as a couple of guys from the Hospital where I’m working in Whangarei were heading there so I thought I’d tag along too.
I’m planning on fishing out of Urquharts Bay with a friend from Auckland who is coming up for the King of the Harbour fishing competition, we will fish further round the heads though as we will have all day, tonight I just fished in the bay and ventured out into the channel between 9, 7, and 5 bouys.
There were fish in the bay but they were on the small side, the bigger fish were hanging out in the deep of the channel, I picked up a couple of small Snapper on the edge of the channel near No.9 bouy, then picked up this nice fish between 7 and 9 bouys.
Then ended up wrapping my Lucanus around my rudder, now the last time I wrapped a line around my rudder I ended up taking a swim trying to untangle it, so today I just headed to the shore…
The tide had changed and the current was really starting to pick up, this seemed to bring the fish on the bite and hooked up twice more to good fish but neither of them stayed on long enough to be brought to the surface.
Time to paddle back and see how the others are doing in the bay – “just small stuff” was the general opinion. Ah well time ot call it quits for the day.

How are you getting on cleaning/drying your gear every day?

Yes that’s one of the things that does take a back seat a little as there are only so many hours in a day… I’ll do a post about it soon…
