I tried somewhere else new today, Matapouri, I’ve been there a few times with the family but haven’t fished there at all
It didn’t go so well today…
No fishfinder… Battery went flat after about 15 mins (forgot to swap batteries after several days of fishing…)
So didn’t really know where to fish, tried in close and in the wash and all I managed to do was feed the reef fish, saw a couple of boats about 500m off the Mermaid Pools to the north, so paddled over, still no fish, the boats weren’t catching either..
Wind was blowing me further and further out, still no fish and no idea how deep it was etc, was about 1.5km off the coast now so decided to call it quits, just as I paddled off the Lucanus took off at a great rate of knots towards the shore, grabbed the rod, wound down on it, put a good solid bend in the Ugly Stik but then nothing… Lucanus came back up minus one hook
Ah well better to be out there than sat at home on the couch…

I’m thinking the fish that picked the Lucanus up was more than likely a shark, just had that feel, slowly swimming off at it’s own pace, then sliced clean through the 80lb braid on the hook without so much as a tug…
