After picking up the Kingfish yesterday and with the weather looking good, I packed up some heavier gear and even rigged up a jig to get back out there and try to find a bigger Kingi.

So get to Whangaumu and launch about 7:15pm, sea is just as good as yesterday although the rolling swell has gone and replaced with just a small chop, nothing to keep me off the water or stop me heading back to the wreck I was at yesterday.

It’s about a 3km paddle to get out there and took me roughly thirty minutes stopping occassionaly to drop a bait on any likely looking signs that appeared on the sounder.

Then finally there, so grab my jig rod and try to get the hook cover off the new assist hook I fitted earlier, can’t get it off with the pliers, I know I’ll cut it off, pull out my Leatherman Skeletool and flick out the blade, so I can cut off the plastic cover…

Now you may already know where this is going… Yep hold the hook, slice the plastic, slice straight through the plastic and then carry on straight through the end of my little finger… Ouch! Must have been pretty deep instantly it was gushing blood…

Time to get out that first aid kit I always carry with me on the kayak as I need to try and stop the bleeding, remember I’m now about 3km from the beach… Thank fully there was enough to get a temporary bandage and plaster on there but still couldn’t really stop the bleeding, so even though the sounder is showing what looks like some awesome fish, I need to get back to land sooner rather than later just in case – that and the fact that there is now my blood all over the kayak in and in the water…

A quick call home to let my wife know where I am, what’s happened etc just in case it gets any worse… And a slow paddle back, I couldn’t push too hard as my finger was getting very painful as my heart rate started to rise, so I stuck to many short paddles rather than one hard out long paddle back, took me just over an hour to get back to the beach. Sunset tonight was good too.

So sorry no fish caught tonight… Now back home I’ve cleaned and dressed the finger, sore as hell but not bleeding any more…

So if you don’t carry an emergency kit on your kayak, may be you should, you never know when you might need it!

Looks like ketchup to me :)

I had a hell of a job getting that little bit of plastic off my jig hook as well so I can see how it would happen. I was in my garage with all the right tools and it still took me a while to get it off!

There’s probably a tool for it, those jigging fanatics seem to have a tool for everything… I can tell you though that a Leathermen probably isn’t it…
