Archives for February, 2010

As we all know by now there was a huge earthquake in Chile in the early hours of Sunday (New Zealand time), and all of the New Zealand eastern coast line has been under tsunami alert most of the day. I never planned on fishing this morning but rather this afternoon / evening, from somewhere [...]

Yay, day 29, the end is now well and truly in sight! As you know I didn’t go North for the weekend and ended up back in Auckland yesterday afternoon. Was good to surprise the family as they didn’t know I was heading back, there was another reason for coming back to Auckland…

Day 28 should have been day one of the Beach and Boat fishing comp for me but after earlier in the week deciding that it just wasn’t me this year and then coming down with the flu, I decided to keep the day off work, turned off the alarm clock, and slept in today…

Woke up this morning to an alarm that sounded several times louder than normal, what’s going on, lifted my head off the pillow and it felt twice as heavy, hmm, this ain’t good, yep thick head, runny nose, body aching, yep I’ve gone and got a dose of the man flu!

Been raining on and off here in Whangarei today, looked like it was going to be a wet one tonight that’s for sure, but by the time I got home it turned out to be ok, a bit of a breeze was hanging around, so where tonight..?

The wind has been up all day again, the swell forecast was big so where to go, I didn’t fancy being tossed around again, so wanted to stay out of the open ocean if possible, could do the Ngunguru estuary but to be honest I didn’t want to spoil my favorite spot by over fishing [...]

After such good conditions last night, and a nice clear day all day today, I planned on heading out of Matapouri, and paddling around and fishing the heads between Matapouri and Tutukaka.

After a weekend of paddling, the body was against a big paddle, but hey, it’s only 2 km and a bit to Goat Island from Whangaumu Bay, what’s another 2 km… I’m sure it’ll be worth it, well I hope so at least!

Something different today! After discovering a gem of a fishing spot on day 14, and having my family (including my nine year old son Josh) with me this weekend I decided it was time to put Josh in the back of my kayak and take him fishing.

It had been windy all day in Whangarei, averaging 40 km/h and gusting up to 55 km/h, and it hadn’t dropped by fishing time so where to go in the kayak or do I flag it and go rock fishing…

It’s been a pretty miserable day here in Whangarei today, it’s been raining for most of the day so it was going to be a wet one for sure. The good thing was that the wind was pretty absent today so I thought it would be a good time to head out in front of [...]

After coming to the conclusion that Whangaumu isn’t holding any Snapper, well at least for me in the center or northern side, I decided to try back in the Whangarei harbour where at least I picked up several fish on Sunday…

Ok back in the kayak today, even though the wind was blowing a gale when I went out, I had picked to head out from Whangaumu again as it would protect me from the strong Northerly, so time to find some fish.

After two huge paddling days, and probably the previous 15 days all catching up on me, today had to be a no kayak day, so I was back on the rocks at Ngunguru.

Day 16 and it’s the day of the King of the Harbour Fishing Competition, a local Whangarei competition, a friend of mine, Paul (Technical) came down from Auckland on Saturday night to join me, so could either of us be crowned King of the Harbour?

Well I’ve made it this far at least, yay! So where today? It’s a Saturday so I have the whole day to play with… I’ve had my eye on Elizabeth Reef for a while now after first seeing it from Woolley’s Bay.

I’m living in Ngunguru in a house which is only about 300m from the estuary but apart from the one day I fished off the rocks I haven’t actually fished locally, so tonight I took the kayak off the roof of the car, put it on my C-Tug trolley, loaded all my gear on, and [...]

Day thirteen, will at least it wasn’t unlucky… Tonight I headed down to Urquharts Bay at the end of the Whangarei heads for a bit of a practice and look around before the King of the Harbour competition on Sunday (Day 16)

I tried somewhere else new today, Matapouri, I’ve been there a few times with the family but haven’t fished there at all

Right so with the finger all patched up it’s time to head back on to the water, the weather is closing in and looks like it’s going to be a wet one, but hey I’ve got waterproofs…

After picking up the Kingfish yesterday and with the weather looking good, I packed up some heavier gear and even rigged up a jig to get back out there and try to find a bigger Kingi.

I’m back up north, and this has to be my best day yet, no monster fish but beautiful conditions and a few fish caught including my first Kingfish…

I’ve been lucky enough to have been sponsored by K-Labs during the 30 day challenge. They have sent me a range of Asso 100% flurocarbon leader to use.

Alarm goes off at 5:00am, oh really is it 5:00am already, doesn’t feel like I’ve had any sleep, I’m feeling like this whole thing is getting a bit much, ah well, time to get up and head to Narrowneck…

Another day another new location, this time I fished out of Marsden Marina, I launched and went with the current flow out past the timber port and carried on past the oil refinery wharf too.
